    World Breastfeeding Week begins

World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) was initiated in 1992 by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) to commemorate the Innocenti Declaration, which was signed in August 1990 by government policymakers, WHO, UNICEF and other organisations to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding. The first week of August was chosen to align with the signing of this declaration.Observations during WBW include educational workshops, public awareness campaigns, and community support activities. These events are designed to provide mothers with the information and resources they need to successfully breastfeed, as well as to create a supportive environment that encourages breastfeeding as a natural and beneficial practice.Globally, WBW has had a significant impact by fostering a greater understanding of the importance of breastfeeding and encouraging policies that support breastfeeding mothers. It has also helped to normalise breastfeeding in public. This week is aimed at promoting the benefits of breastfeeding and to improve the health of babies across the world. Breastfeeding associations around the world organise activities to celebrate breastfeeding and its important contribution to survival, health and wellbeing.
