Windrush Day
Not a public holiday, this day marks the anniversary of the 1948 arrival of up to 1,027 Afro-Carribean migrants mostly from the Caribbean to the UK on the Empire Windrush, who were recruited by the British government to help post-war recovery. Many of these migrants experienced extreme discrimination from the British public. The day was created by the British government in response to community calls and its purpose is to celebrate the contribution of the Windrush Generation and their descendants.
