This day honours the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. The commemoration of this day was sparked by the death of Rita Hester, a transgender woman killed in 1998 as a result of transphobia. A memorial service is held on this day where the names of those who have lost their lives from November 20th of the former year to November 20th of the current year is read out loud, among candlelight. Marches, film screenings, art shows and church services are also held in their honour.
