    Tiradentes Day (Brazil)

An annual national public holiday that commemorates the 1792 date of execution of Brazilian national hero Joaquim Jose da Silva Xavier (1746–1792), nicknamed Tiradentes (tooth-puller) because of his vocation as a dentist. Silva Xavier joined a revolutionary movement for independence and was executed for plotting against the Portuguese colonial administration, after a two-year trial where he defended his cause with great conviction.
