The Feast of the Nativity of Theotokos

This Christian feast day celebrates the birth of Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, who was born to previously barren parents Joachim and Anna in answer to their prayers. ‘Theotokos’ means ‘the one who gave birth to God’. Vespers and three Old Testament readings are served the evening before the day. Sometimes on the morning of the feast Matins is served and on the day Divine Liturgy is served.
