Swiss National Day (Switzerland)

An annual public holiday in Switzerland, this national day commemorates the August 1291 signing of the Federal Charter that lay the groundwork for the present nation, which was formed in 1848 when a new constitution was adopted. The lighting of bonfires on mountain tops and the ringing of church bells feature on this day alongside typical national day commemorations such as public speeches and fireworks.
