Spiritual Shouter Baptist Liberation Day (Trinidad and Tobago)

An annual national public holiday in Trinidad and Tobago. The Spiritual Baptist faith is a combination of Protestantism and African cultures and beliefs, originating in the Caribbean. The British colonial authority outlawed this faith for 34 years, until 1951, when the it was granted religious freedom. Spiritual Baptist Liberation Day was established by Prime Minister Basdeo Panday in 1996 to commemorate the repeal of prohibition and the fight for religious freedom. Processions, church services, plays, and religious observances and the ringing of freedom bells accompany the festival.
