Sinhalese & Tamil New Year’s Eve (Sri Lanka)
Known as Aluth Avurudda in Sinhalese and Puthandu in Tamil, this is an annual public holiday in Sri Lanka. Though not purely a religious festival, it holds special significance to Hindus as it is said to be the day that the Hindu god of creation, Lord Brahma, started creation. The day also marks the start of the new agricultural season.
