Saint Stephen’s Day (Hungary)
Also known as Foundation Day and Constitution Day, Saint Stephen’s Day is an official state holiday in Hungary. Saint Stephen was the first King of Hungary and was known for converting the Magyar people to Christianity. It is a tradition to cut bread on this day to celebrate the arrival of the harvest. There is a national competition to find Hungary’s ‘birthday cake’. It is by invitation only and preparations by confectioners begin months ahead. The day finishes with a huge firework display on the Danube. All shops, stores and supermarkets are closed on this day.
