Republic Day in North Macedonia
Republic Day in North Macedonia is celebrated on August 2nd every year and is a major national holiday. The day commemorates two significant events in the establishment of the statehood of the country which took place on this date. The first event was the Ilinden Uprising in 1903, which was an attempt to establish an independent state of Macedonia. The second event was the proclamation of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia in 1944. The day is celebrated with fireworks, family reunions, barbecues, picnics, concerts, and sports games. Macedonians have traditionally celebrated this day because of its religious significance as well, as it is also the day of St. Elijah.
