Peat Cutting Monday
Peat Cutting Monday is a cultural holiday celebrated in the Falkland Islands on the first Monday in October. This holiday has been observed since 2002 and was created to replace Falklands Day, which had been celebrated in August. Traditionally, this day was the time of year when Falkland Islanders went out to cut cubes of surface-soil peat which was then used as the primary fuel for heating homes and cooking food in the islands. Nowadays, little peat cutting takes place, with Islanders instead using other sources of fuel. This day is now celebrated with camping, fishing, and other outdoor activities.
