Ninoy Aquino Day

Ninoy Aquino Day is a national non-working holiday in the Philippines, celebrated annually on August 21st. It commemorates the assassination of Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., the husband of Corazon Aquino, who later became Philippine President. His assassination led to the downfall of the dictator and kleptocrat president of the Philippines Ferdinand Marcos on February 25, 1986, through the People Power Revolution. The holiday is also known as ‘Araw ng Kabayanihan ni Ninoy Aquino’ in Filipino, which translates to ‘Day of Heroism of Ninoy Aquino’. The day is marked by commemoration ceremonies, which are traditionally attended by presidents. The holiday is an important cultural event in the Philippines, honoring the life and legacy of a national hero who fought for democracy and freedom.
