    Matariki

Matariki is a significant cultural holiday in New Zealand, celebrated every year in late June or early July to mark the beginning of the Māori New Year. The holiday is named after the Matariki cluster of stars, also known as the Pleiades. Traditionally, Matariki was a time for remembrance, peace, and celebration. During the 19th century, the number of Matariki celebrations declined, along with other traditional Māori practices. However, in the late 20th century, Matariki was revived, and in 2022, the New Zealand government declared it an official public holiday. The dates for the Matariki public holiday vary from year to year, but this year, it will be celebrated on July 14.
