Martyrs’ Day (Tunisia)

An annual national public holiday that commemorates those who gave their lives in the cause of freedom and independence of Tunisia, especially those who died during the struggle against French colonial rule. The day marks an event on this day in 1938 when 22 protesters were killed in Tunis during a demonstration against French rule. This was a significant moment in the struggle for independence. Tunisia gaine independence on 20 March 1956 and became a republic on 25 July 1957.
