    Lupercalia

Lupercalia was an ancient Roman festival, observed annually to purify the city and promote health and fertility. On this day, the Romans would sacrifice male goats, after which would follow a feast. The festival declined in popularity with the rise of Christianity, and the banning in 391AD of any non-Christian festivals.
