Kurama Fire Festival (Japan)

The Kurama Fire Festival is a ceremony reenactment held in commemoration of an earthquake in 940 that struck Kyoto to move the Yuki Shrine to Kurama in order to protect the then-capital from any further disasters. The festival is known for its procession of men carrying large flaming torches, which can weigh up to 80kg, and groups of children holding small pine torches throughout the Kumara Village.
