Kashmir Solidarity Day (Pakistan, New York)
A national public holiday in Pakistan since 2004 in support of the efforts of people in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir to secede from India.
In the US state of New York, the day is recognised as Kashmir American Day and recognises New York’s Kashmiri community.
The dispute over Kashmir has its origins in the 1947 British Partition of India, which followed India’s independence from Britain and was formalised in the Indian Independence Act 1947. The Partition resulted in an estimated 1 million deaths and unprecedented migration, which created the seeds of hostility that still affect the relationship between India and Pakistan today.
