Juan Santamaria Day (Costa Rica)

An annual national public holiday in Costa Rica in honour of Juan Santamaria Rodriguez, a Costa Rican hero who played a key role in the country’s victory against American forces in the Battle of Rivas in 1856. He died on 11 April 1856 carrying a torch he was using to set fire to the enemy stronghold. His brave actions helped lead Costa Rica to victory.
