23 August
International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition
This day has been designated by UNESCO to instil in our memories the transatlantic slave trade. The date was chosen as it was on the night of the 22nd into the 23rd that an uprising occurred in Saint Domingue (Haiti). This was a catalyst for the abolition of the slave trade. UNESCO urges its member states to organise events, encouraging young people, educators, artists, and intellectuals to participate.
