    Indigenous Literacy Day (Australia)

Held on the first Wednesday of September every year this day was started in 2004 when former teacher and Brisbane bookstore owner Suzy Wilson created the Riverbend Readers Challenge to raise funds to boost literacy levels. It is hosted by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, an Australian not-for-profit charity. The day raises awareness of issues around education experienced by many Indigenous communities in Australia. It also acts as a fundraiser to collect literary resources for children living in remote areas and an opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and languages.
