This day commemorates the Declaration of Independence from the USSR in 1991. Most of the celebrations take place in Kyiv. The President gives a speech, flowers are laid by state leaders at the monuments of famous Ukrainians and then those who celebrate assemble at St Sophia’s Church to recite a prayer for Ukraine. Some years there are military parades and displays, in 2021 a large celebration marked the thirtieth anniversary.
