Independence Day (Sri Lanka)

Aka National Day, this day is a national public holiday in Sri Lanka, celebrated annually. It commemorates the country’s 1948 attainment of independence from Britain and formation as a republic. Celebrations and traditions include a flag-raising ceremony, parades and performances. The day is also an opportunity to celebrate the year’s achievements, pay tribute to national heroes, and honour the military.
