Also known as Merdeka Day (Freedom Day), Independence Day commemorates the Malayan Declaration of Independence on August 31, 1957. There are many official and unofficial ceremonies around the country on this day. Homes and businesses are decorated with flags and lights, and parades, stage shows, competitions, and exhibitions take place to celebrate Malaysian independence.
