Independence Day in Algeria
Independence Day in Algeria is celebrated annually on July 5th and marks the country’s liberation from French colonial rule in 1962. The day is marked with patriotic parades, cultural events, and concerts that are well attended by the public. Algerians show a strong sense of unity and cultural pride throughout all the festivities. The flag, which is green and white, is flown proudly throughout the country and symbolizes Algeria’s freedom. Algerian culture and society were profoundly affected by 130 years of colonial rule, by the bitter independence struggle, and by the subsequent broad mobilization policies of post-independence regimes. Algerians are known for their hospitality and generosity, and visiting is a mainstay of social life, mostly within the circle of extended family.
