Independence Day (Chile)
A national public holiday in Chile, Independence Day is celebrated to commemorate the date in 1810 when the Chilean people declared independence from Spain. The Spanish had ruled Chile since the 16th Century, and the movement to independence was driven along with a number of other South American countries rejecting Colonial rule. Along with Christmas, this is the most important event in the Chilean calendar. It is celebrated with military parades and street parties.
