Hungry Ghost Festival
Also known as Zhong Yuan Festival, the Hungry Ghost Festival is observed by Taoists and Buddhists in some East Asian countries. In the Chinese calendar, it is believed that on the 15th night of the 7th month ghosts and spirits come out from the lower realm. Activities include the burning of incense and joss sticks, as well as food offerings. Elaborate meals are prepared and served, with an empty chair for each deceased member of the family.
