Heroes’ Day (Zambia)

A national public holiday in Zambia, Heroes’ Day remembers Zambians who fought and died during the long struggle for Zambia’s independence from Britain and celebrates people from all spheres of society who have contributed heroically to the nation. On the tenth anniversary of independence in 1974, the Zambian Freedom Statue featuring freedom-fighter Zanco Mpundu Mutembo breaking free of his chains was unveiled in Zambia’s capital, Lusaka. The statue has become a focal point on many significant days, and is featured on all Zambia’s bank notes. Heroes’ Day is the start of a two-day public holiday, ending with Unity Day.
