Hariyali Teej is the first of the three Teej festivals celebrated during the Sawan and Bhadrapada months in the Hindu calendar. It is mostly celebrated by women in North Indian states. It is a festival to worship the Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva through prayer and fasting. To celebrate the day women often dress in new clothes, typically green in colour as Hariyali means greenery. A popular tradition is for women and girls to gather and sing folk songs while swinging on a swing set.
