George Town World Heritage City Day (Malaysia)
This is a regional public holiday in Malaysia that marks the anniversary of the 2008 recognition of George Town as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. George Town, named after King George III of England, was the first British settlement in Southeast Asia. UNESCO calls George Town and the city of Melaka, which was also included on the World Heritage List, ‘a unique architectural and cultural townscape without parallel anywhere in Southeast Asia.’ The communities of Melaka and George Town come together on this day to celebrate.
