Esala Full Moon Poya
Esala Full Moon Poya is a significant holiday celebrated in Sri Lanka on the full moon in the eighth lunar month. It is one of the twelve full moon days that are considered auspicious by Sri Lanka’s Buddhists, and it is a public holiday. The holiday celebrates the arrival of the Buddha Tooth Relic at the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy. The festival of Esala Poya is an opportunity for Sri Lankans to maintain traditional practices, remember their history, and respect their culture. The perahera processions take place all around the island, but the biggest celebrations are in Kandy, where dancers, musicians, and elephants can be seen all throughout the week, culminating in the biggest procession on the last night of the festival.
