Dutch Emancipation Day
Dutch Emancipation Day is celebrated in several countries and territories, including Suriname, Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius, and the Netherlands. In Suriname, this day is known as “Keti Koti,” which means “break the chains.” The holiday commemorates July 1, 1863, when slaves were freed in Suriname. The day is also known as “Manspasi Dei” or “Prisiri Manspasi,” meaning “Emancipation” or “Emancipation Festival.” The Keti Koti festival marks the date when slavery was abolished in Suriname and the Dutch Antilles in 1863. The festival organization also aims to pressure the Dutch government for reparations.
