Día del Negro y la Cultura Afrocostarricense / Black Peoples and Afro-Costa Rican Culture Day (Costa Rica)]

This holiday, initated by the Costa Rican government in 1980, showcases the vibrant African essence of Costa Rican culture and honours the contributions of Afro-Costa Ricans to the country’s history and identity. The date commemorates the 1920 First International Convention of the Negro Peoples of the World, an event which took place in Madison Square Garden, New York, and culminated in the publication of the Declaration of the Rights of the Negro Peoples of the World. Celebrations include many cultural, educational and festive activities, including traditional Afro-Costa Rican music genres such as calypso and reggae, performed in public spaces.
