Dessalines Day
Dessalines Day is a cultural holiday celebrated in Haiti on October 17th each year. It commemorates the life of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the man who led Haitians out of slavery and became the nation’s first president and Emperor. The day is celebrated with parties, parades, and historic reenactments of his life. It is a day to remember one of the founding fathers of Haiti who played a pivotal role in the Haitian Revolution, leading to its independence in 1804. Haitians also celebrate several other patriotic holidays, including Flag Day, Battle of Vertiere Day, and Independence Day.
