Day of the Dead begins (Mexico)

The ‘Day of the Dead’, or Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. Individuals celebrate this important day by paying respect to family and friends who have passed away. On the days of celebration, home altars usually place offerings (‘ofrendas’) of favourite food and beverages in honour of loved ones, as well as photos and memorabilia. The graves of the deceased are decorated with Mexican Marigold flowers, which are thought to attract souls to these offerings to guide the souls back to their family homes. Observances of the holiday are seen around the world, such as in the United States, Asia, Oceania and Europe
