Day of Heroes (Paraguay)

A national public holiday in Paraguay, this day commemorates the Paraguayan War against the Triple Alliance of Argentina, the Empire of Brazil and Uruguay, which took place from 1864 to 1870. The day honours the sacrifices of the Paraguayan soldiers and heroes who fought for the independence of their country. The holiday is an occasion for remembering the country’s history and recognising the sacrifices and achievements of its heroes. The day marks the anniversary of the death of the death of Marshal Francisco Solano Lopez, President of Paraguay from 1862–1870, who was killed during battle on this day in 1870. His death ended the war, after which Argentine and Brazilian troops occupied Paraguay until 1876.
