    Cyprus National Day (Cyprus)

    An annual national public holiday that marks the 1955 date of commencement of a series of attacks by the Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston against British rule of Cyprus. The day is commemorated with military parades, speeches and cultural events throughout the country. The day is a reminder of the struggles and a celebration of the hard-won independence. Cyprus formally gained independence from Britain in 1960.
