Aka Keriba Lagaw Buiya, this festival commemorates the day in 1871 when the London Missionary society arrived at Erub Island (Darnley Island). Clan Elder and Warrior Dadad was waiting to greet them and defend his land. The Reverend Samuel McFarlane dropped to his knees, offering the Bible to Dabad. He accepted the gift, interpreting it as ‘the light’. Christianity was integrated into their cultural customs and identity, known as ‘Ailan Kastom’. The day is celebrated with a re-enactment, church services, hymns, and feasts.
