Also called May Day, Beltane is the Gaelic May Day festival.  It is an ancient Celtic festival to mark the first day of summer.  Historically, it symbolises purification and is half way between the Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice. in the Northern Hemisphere this day is celebrated on the 1st of May.
