Australian South Sea Islanders National Recognition Day
Between 1863 and 1908, over 62,000 South Sea Islanders were illegally brought into Queensland to work in the sugar, pastoral, fishing, and cotton industries. 83 Pacific Islands population were decimated. In 1994, the then Prime Minister, Paul Keating recognised ASSI as a ‘distinct cultural group’ under legislation. On this day, many government agencies raise the ASSI flag in recognition.
