Act of Independence of Lithuania

The second of two Lithuanian public holidays celebrating independence, this day marks the date the Act of 16 February was signed by the Council of Lithuania in 1918, declaring the restoration of an independent state of Lithuania with Vilinus as its capital. This was the conclusion of a long and complex process, with the German Empire exerting pressure on the Council. This is considered the legal basis for the existence of modern Lithuania.
